A Victorian antique crinoline day dress dating to the 1850s, in excellent condition. Two pieces, bodice and skirt, in a rich brown silk, woven with small raised rectangles arranged in zig zag formations, the raised design catching the light and giving a glossy appearance. The bodice is fitted and boned, with a long narrow torso and flaring round peplum. Fastening in the front with hidden hooks, with a single button at the neck, and small decorative black cut glass buttons. Self fabric ruffles are applied diagonally, and around the hem, the hem itself cut to scallops, with a raw edge and decorative perforations. Wonderful pagoda sleeves - flaring trumpets with a gathered band at the bicep and more silk ruffles. The skirt forms a full crinoline dome ( shown over a hoop, not included ) pleated in to the waist all around, the hem finished with twill tape. Hand sewn. CONDITION Very good. The trim on the front right of the bodice is snapped and partially loose in two places , but none is missing. One of the bones is snapped. A couple of very small holes and very small repairs. The hooks on the skirt waistband have been moved, and there are horizontal creases around the hem, it looks like it has been taken up then let down again. The button at the neck is damaged and missing it's top. A possible small period patched repair under the right arm.
